DOKKŌDŌ PRECEPT FOUR
“Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world.”
You are not the center of the universe, nor are you the most important person alive. Remain humble upon your journey to become a writer, and you shall keep your mind open to learning from those that have come before you.
When you stop learning, you start regressing.
You are too complex of a being to be known fully, and to make matters worse, you are too close to the subject to gain the perspective needed to understand it in its totality. You cannot see the forest for the trees.
As a writer, you can best model your characters by exploring your own feelings, and by learning of others you can in turn learn more about yourself. You have more in common with other humans, than you have differences.
By keeping your focus on the world at large, you avoid the trap of arrogance, and ensure that your writing will be accessible to others.
The “Dokkōdō” (Japanese: 獨行道) (“The Path of Aloneness”, “The Way to Go Forth Alone”, or “The Way of Walking Alone”), is a short work written by Miyamoto Musashi a week before he died in 1645.
