DEBT
You do not owe other authors your time, money, nor attention. It is not your job to help them find their way.
You are an author. Your job is to write fiction for readers to enjoy.
That being so. You did not achieve your success alone. As the saying goes, “No man is an island.” Why would you think you are the exception?
Just as you were helped, it behooves you to help others.
First, it is the right thing to do, because without paying it forward the support system would die, and then you never would have made progress.
Second, it is a purely selfish reason to help. You learn more from teaching others, than you can ever learn by yourself. You do not know, what you do not know.
Third, one day a mentee will surpass your level of success, and on that day, you will want to ask for their assistance. Who will they help first? The person who did not give them a few minutes of their time in their early days, when it could make the largest impact; or the person who was willing to give five to ten minutes a few days a week to help guide them?
Under no circumstance should you hold their hand, and guide them step by step. That would only serve to hobble their future progress. But you can share the resources that you found most enlightening.
